1.) Do your research, read other books in your genre to make sure your idea is completely original. Don't be afraid to "borrow" little things, but you don't want the plot to be the same.
2.) Write what you like. If you try to write romance but you love paranormal books it is going to sound forced.
3.) Query if you want to, but don't be afraid to look into self publishing. There is nothing wrong with making your own dreams come true on your own timeline on your terms.
