Guest Post: Food in Books by RaShelle Workman

I love food. Love to read about it. Write about it. Eat it. Smell it. And on and on… You get the idea. I love food.

And I put all kinds in my stories.

In “Sleeping Roses,” the first chapter opens with the main character in a restaurant, crying into her chef salad.

In the Immortal Essence series, the main character, Venus is imprisoned and tested by ALT (Alien Life Tracker), a secret sanction of the government. While in there, Michael talks the guards into feeding her. She gets a burger, fries and chocolate shake.

And in Blood and Snow, they eat tons. Waffles. Pancakes. And, even a birthday cake.

Food brings reality to a story. Authenticity.

My absolute favorite food: Red Velvet... anything. Cupcakes, cheesecake, muffins, cookies...

Here's a recipe for Red Velvet Cheesecake. It's taken from The Country Cook (you might want to check out her blog. She has boatloads of delicious recipes).

What you need:

1 box red velvet cake mix + ingredients to make the cake.
1 (8oz) block cream cheese
1/2 C sugar
1 egg white
1 container of cream cheese frosting.

Mix cake according to package directions. When finished, set aside.

In a separate bowl, mix cream cheese, sugar, and egg white until smooth and creamy (takes a couple of minutes).

In 9x13 inch pan, spray with cooking spray (or grease and flour), then pour half the mixed red velvet cake into the bottom. Spoon the cream cheese mixture over the top, and swirl, then put the other half of the red velvet over the top. Bake according to package directions.

When it's totally cooked, remove from oven and allow to cool completely.

Then ice with cream cheese frosting.

Keep refrigerated.
